My Color Pallets for 5 recent movies
I thought it might be interesting to get together some still images of these various movies and then pull out the color pallet of each.
Obviously this is just my opinion, honestly, I haven’t even seen all of these movies. I chose these images because I feel that the people that put these movies together made some very conscious decisions to use color to portray mood. Movie’s are complex things with multiple scenes, each with a different look and feel. I feel that the colors I pulled out of the still images below hit on the overarching spectrum that sums up the movies goal.

Avatar
Avatar is what started me on this little project. Probably because I noticed the dominance of one particular color… blue.
The most obvious use is the blue skin, but I think it goes deeper than that. The blue goes through to both sides, with the color casts of the human’s electronics, to the glowing blue of the night forest.

The Wolfman
There’s an obvious tone to this movie, it’s a fantasy/horror about werewolves, it’s going to be dark and moody with a lot of desaturated grays.
Something I found intriguing about it is that most scenes outdoors are lit naturally by moonlight, but the indoor night scenes are all by candle light, creating this contrasting warm, orange glow to the ‘human’ indoors verses the cold ‘beast’ outside.

The Book of Eli
Call me a sucker for that survival/post-apocalypse look, but I really like how they used color throughout this one. The outdoor scenes all have that sterile taupe haze to them that really make you feel the desolation and grime of the world.

The Lovely Bones
I got an interesting sense from this one, that of season. You can feel the winter temperature through the color pallet. To me, it gives a sense of coldness without creating hopelessness in the real world.

Alice in Wonderland
This one is probably the hardest I picked to pin down. It’s got a dark tone through the whole thing, but in nearly every shot there’s some type of striking accent color somewhere. Each Scene has a different pallet, but I think these colors dominate.
That’s it, hope you found that interesting. Do you think I missed something, or got something totally wrong? Let me know below.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who notices movie color palettes. Another interesting one I just watched is “The Invention of Lying.” Lots of pretty blues, greens, grays, golds and woodtones. Check out the screen shots here:
